Volunteering Makes the Perfect New Years Resolution.

Volunteering makes the perfect New Years Resolution because volunteerism provides countless benefits for community, and the health and happiness of people who commit to sharing themselves as a volunteer.

Here are just a few reasons to sign up to volunteer today:

1. Volunteering has been linked with increased levels of happiness and decreased depression. The Huffington Post Article, Volunteering Could Boost Happiness, Decrease Depression And Help You Live Longer: Study, written by Sara Kondrath, PhD, reviews new research into the topic of volunteerism, health, and happiness.

2. People who volunteer report physical, mental, and emotional health benefits. Doing Good is Good for You, A United Health Group study reveals key benefits of volunteering that make a positive impact on people’s health including feeling better mentally, physically, and emotionally.

3. Volunteers help create and support healthy communities.  CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for abused or neglected children in court and in the community.  As a CASA Volunteer you help ensure that children are placed in safe, loving homes where they can thrive.

4. Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers help make a difference in the lives of abused or neglected children.  To learn more about becoming a CASA visit the  Volunteer section on the CASA of the Continental Divide website.

I Am For The Child in 2017.

Volunteering can easily become one of those back burner activities. The type of activity that always seems like a nice thing to do, but loses steam when it comes to reaching out and signing up.

Make volunteering a reality this year. Many organizations have made it easier than ever to find opportunities and sign up online. Visit https://mtncasa.org/volunteer/volunteer-overview/ to find out all the ways that you can make a difference for abused and neglected children.

There has never been a better time to commit to volunteering in the New Year. Help us at CASA of the Continental Divide support children dealing with abuse and neglect find a voice and an friend  in an overwhelming and confusing system.

Trauma Informed Supercommunity Webinar: September 17, 2015

There has been increased focus and attention on implementing trauma-informed approaches in child welfare settings. “Trauma-Informed” has become one of many new buzzwords in our work, but what does “trauma-informed” actually look like in practice?  This webinar aims to answer these questions by utilizing examples from two child welfare jurisdictions participating in a SAMHSA funded project with the Chadwick Center for Children & Families.  Presenters will review the essential elements of a trauma-informed system, in addition to providing concrete strategies for assessing the readiness of a system to change. They will review common themes across all 5 Supercommunities.

Adolescents and Substance Use
Studies show that exposure to alcohol and drugs during adolescence may interrupt the natural course of brain maturation and key processes of brain development. There’s evidence that suggests brain development may be more vulnerable to the effects of alcohol during adolescence, as well. The impact of drugs and alcohol on the developing brain can have harmful effects on academic, occupational and social functioning that can extend into adulthood. In need of more support? Talk to your principal or school counselor for assistance.

Nadine Burke Harris: How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime
16-minute video.  Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. An impassioned plea for pediatric medicine to confront the prevention and treatment of trauma, head-on.

CASA Day at the Capital

March 16th is the CASA Day at the Capital.  Each year CASA programs go to the capital and meet with our representatives. This is an opportunity that CASA takes to let those who set policy know about the needs of the children we serve. You are invited to come to the capital and meet with legislators.  We are still in the planning stages but the information I have now is the event would be from 8:00am-12:00pm.  We meet in the morning with CASA lobbies who while orientate us to the day.  The CASA in Colorado office can set up with individual meetings with our representatives who we haven’t met with yet.
What I need to know from you is if you are interested in attending.  Once I know who would like to come I will make arrangements for setting up meetings and possible carpooling as needed.   Please let Kathy know by March 3rd if you want to participate.  kathyr@www.mtncasa.org
